Cllr Michael Mordey
Cllr Mordey was appointed as Leader of Sunderland City Council in May 2024. He was born in Sunderland and has spent his whole career supporting the place he proudly calls home.
He was first elected to the council to represent Hendon ward in May 2008.
Prior to becoming Leader, Cllr Mordey held a number of positions including Cabinet Member for City Services and Deputy Leader of the Council.
He represents the council and city on a number of bodies and organisations including the North East Combined Authority where he is portfolio holder for Finance and Investment and Chair of the Finance and Investment Board. He is also a member of the Key Cities group executive as portfolio holder for Finance, Infrastructure and Investment.
Cllr Mordey is focused on ensuring that no one and no place is left behind as Sunderland continues its ambitious transformation through proactive regeneration and investment.
He is passionate about connecting residents to all of the opportunities being created, as the council works alongside its partners in all sectors to build a city where everyone is proud to belong and can realise their full potential.
