From air quality monitoring to assistive care technologies, our unique partnership with Boldyn Networks fits perfectly with our plans for the Expo.
Leveraging Sunderland’s leading smart city infrastructure, Expo Sunderland aims to bring the cityscape, homes, and lifestyles of the future to life. All centred around the UK's first carbon neutral city centre neighbourhood at Riverside Sunderland.

Winner of the Connected Britain Smart Places Award 2023, Connected Britain Digital Council of the Year 2021, UK Smart City of the Year 2020, Sunderland is on track to become one of the UK's most advanced Smart Cities.
The Vaux Neighbourhood will be the centre point for the Expo Homes & Gardens in 2026, providing behind-the-scenes insight, advice, inspiration, innovative ideas and products (for home design, better building, interiors, sustainable living, shared communities and home technology), and as brands will have the opportunity to take over a home or garden, media activity will be sharply focused on them.
In the meantime, The Expo Sunderland event programme sets to develop events in the city over the next 2 years with three themes, each providing game-changing experiences for the visiting public, businesses, education, industry professionals and government alike.
Future Home is the new destination for expert advice, great inspiration, innovative ideas and products for home design, better building, interiors, sustainable living, shared communities and home technology.
The next event in the Future Home series will be unveiled in the “Expo Pavilion” a visually striking, contemporary exhibition and immersive space, assembled in Autumn 2024 at the heart of the transforming Keel Square directly opposite the Vaux Neighbourhood - to tell the story of a future home in the context of its place.
Transforming the framework structure will be a brand-new face fixed, semi-transparent outdoor high-definition screen, attracting visitors with an enriching experience overhead of exclusive screenings, visual spectacles and immersive soundscapes.
Expo Pavilion will also host a series of virtual reality experiences, innovative exhibits and talks in the semi-open spaces, acting as information hubs to fully immerse visitors in the cityscape, homes, and lifestyles of the future and is the ideal setting to showcase the next generation digital infrastructure in action which is fuelling city wide innovation and a raft of digital and data solutions which is already making a transformational difference to those who live work and play in the city.
Future City is where business & government will discuss, explore and progress innovative ideas that create city success. Inspired by Sunderland’s imaginative regeneration, it will explore how to boost social & economic growth and create sustainable cities.
Delivering the Future City will take centre-stage in City Hall on 15-16 October 2024 to bring government, city stakeholders and key businesses back together to see the city centre regeneration gathering pace and stimulate the business economy with a set of innovative solutions to the challenges raised at the first event in October 2023.
Future Living for residents and communities to discover new opportunities in Sunderland including healthy lifestyles, fun and entertaining activities, education, culture, food, low-carbon lifestyles and work.
Your Future Expo is set to take place at the Beacon of Light on 18-20 March 2025 for city educators and industries to play out immersive future skills to our resident population to inspire and show that learning is matched to future employment in Sunderland with extraordinary exhibits, TED-style talks, workshops and competitions.
