The semi-transparent LED screen blends together the physical and digital environment, symbolising the merging of traditional and contemporary elements in our environment and living spaces. To emphasise our global interconnected community, the thought provoking screen programme showcases works that highlight the local culture and geography of Sunderland, alongside works from highly recognised artists and studios on an international scale.

The screen is in essence a living canvas that continually evolves and changes over time, highlighting how the globalisation of arts and culture can influence, inspire, and encourage us to bring a blend of local and international styles, tastes, and perspectives into our daily lives and practices - to improve our wellbeing, sense of ‘home’, and vision towards future living and environment.

Culture in Motion

Artists often shape cultural values and perceptions, and can encourage us to think beyond the conventional.

Contemporary artists often explore themes from history, the environment, and society in their works, making them important contributors to the ongoing conversations about these topics.

The concepts and styles that these artists present can inspire new ideas and trends, to influence and shape our understanding of 'home,' the environment, and how we might live in the future.

Most artists have at least one prominent thread that runs through their works being history, environment, and/or society. In some cases, artists' works may reference all categories.

Historical

Artworks inspired by past movements can educate audiences about the history of artistic expression. By referencing or reinterpreting these styles, artists can help viewers to understand different periods, ideologies, and cultural contexts, helping us to have a deeper appreciation of artistic evolution. This understanding can inspire home design aesthetics and living spaces that are both meaningful and forward thinking.

Environmental

Artists inspired by nature can raise awareness about environmental issues and our connection to the natural world. Their work can influence society's views on the environment, encouraging respect, mindfulness, and sustainable practices. This cultural shift is crucial for creating a more environmentally conscious and responsible world and shaping our concepts of home, environment, and future living.

Societal

Artists who are inspired by society play an important role in reflecting modern life. Their work provides powerful commentary that encourages people to engage with or question societal norms. This can help us better understand the human condition and societal progress, as well as challenge conventional ideas about what 'home' means and the changing dynamics of our environment.
